APPLIANCES: EXTRACTOR HOOD

This article is the first of a series dedicated to the most technological parts in the kitchen. The idea behind these articles is to give a compass to orient the customer among the huge availability of appliances, both on the technical side and on the designing side. Let’s start with an element that is really keen to the experimental designs: the cooker hood. From the juridical point of view, there is always the same doubt: is it mandatory to install the cooker hood in the kitchen? The answer is that if the cooking place is electric or by induction there is no need to have this appliance, while if it’s a gas cooking place, the installation is mandatory. The hood absorbs the cooking fumes ensuring the recycling of air. There are two kinds of models: ducted kitchen hoods and ductless kitchen hoods. The former sucks the fumes and emit them outside the house, the latter purify the air thanks to special filters and recirculate it into the room. To find your way among the different models available on the market, you need to evaluate the proportions of the elements of our kitchen, playing on the effect of volumes as well as finishes. The built-in hood is always a correct choice, that has not to be labelled as a low-cost alternative. A retractable hood enhances a minimal style with precise alignments and doors equipped instead of the handle with grooves or push pull mechanism. It’s interesting to choice contrasting surfaces to differentiate bases and cabinets. For example, the doors of the bases can be matt lacquered, while those of the cabinets can be in back-lacquered glass. It’s very wide the range of possibilities that opens up with the wall installed hood.

QUESTIONE DI SILHOUETTE1

Also the classical design can be enhanced by a solid colour cover, or alternatively, by a dècor finish: grès, micro resin, glass, detachable lacquered and even waterproof wallpapers. Among the most current proposals there are hoods whose aesthetic recalls that of professional kitchens, with angular and steel surfaces, an evergreen, bright and hygienic material. Is the hob positioned on the island? It's possible to dare with an appliance that recalls designer lamps, or stands out like a monolith above the counter.

QUESTIONE DI SILHOUETTE2

And what if we don’t want to see the hood?

There are two solutions: one is the “draft” models, built-in alongside the hob, that when are not functioning completely disappears; the other are panelable hoods, covered with plasterboard panels then plastered.
